Andrew and Melissa’s lifelong correspondence begins as childhood friends exchanging notes and birthday cards. Their bond becomes stronger through the years, even though they are far apart. Andy goes to Yale, Melissa flunks out of college. She gets married while he goes off to war. Despite the distance, they are eventually drawn together for a brief affair – but is it too late?
The 1988 script was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It has been a hit on Broadway and has featured countless well-known Hollywood actors including Kathleen Turner, William Hurt, Lynn Redgrave, Christopher Reeve, Stockard Channing, Christopher Walken, Carol Burnett, Brian Dennehy, Sissy Spacek, Mel Gibson, Elizabeth Taylor and James Earl Jones.
Director Rebecca Blum brings a new dimension to this work that has never been seen before. She has cast three actors each for the roles of Melissa and Andrew so the audience will physically see the passage of time as older actors step into the roles.
This approach to casting Love Letters has never been done before, and Bare Theatre obtained special permission from the playwright himself in order to produce it this way.
We hope audiences will find a thoroughly engaging evening full of love, laughs and tears.
