Bare Theatre and Raleigh Little Theatre continue what has now become a tradition of performing summer Shakespeare in Stephenson Amphitheatre by the Raleigh Rose Garden. The two companies will proudly close out this year’s Wherefore: Shakespeare in Raleigh series with Henry VI, July 29 – August 7, 2016.
This production condenses the three plays that make up Shakespeare’s history into one 90-minute story that focuses exclusively on the famous “War of the Roses.” This conflict, a progression of dynastic wars, ultimately united the British houses of Lancaster and York under the house of Tudor, which would reign through Queen Elizabeth I and the time of Shakespeare.
Under the direction of Lucinda Gainey, Bare Theatre sets the scene in a post-apocalyptic dystopia, where loyalty is questioned, allegiances are tested, and all the players have much to gain – and everything to lose. Cast members will have a hand in designing and building their own-costumes to create the DIY look of a shattered society, and a team of fight choreographers is being assembled to tackle the many battles that erupt throughout the story.
