…one of our favorite minimalist companies.”
Byron Woods, The Independent Weekly
Bare Theatre is a group of artists dedicated to simple, eclectic, non-traditional and spontaneous theatre. We hope to give our audience a clear, articulate and passionate experience of theatre with little other than a room, audience, the actors, and the text.
We present audiences with fresh and exciting interpretations of classic plays (particularly those of William Shakespeare) as well as innovative new works. We place a strong emphasis on maintaining a positive and safe working environment for our casts and crews, both physically and emotionally.
We want everyone – onstage, backstage, and in the audience – to have an outstanding time with us!
We are loosely modeled after Shakespeare’s company, The Lord Chamberlain’s Men (later The King’s Men), and their performance style. Plays performed during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth and King James were typically performed without much or any scenery – on a “bare” stage. Our performances are likewise minimalist.
Shakespeare’s company was entirely made up of men, and men would play female parts. Bare Theatre is a bit more progressive – we not only have women performing, but they often play male roles.
Anywhere and everywhere. “All the world’s a stage, ”
Bare Theatre does not maintain a physical theatre space. Instead, we perform around the Triangle of North Carolina (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill). Since 2001, we have performed in over a dozen locations ranging from 50-seat black box studio to 2,000-seat amphitheatre. We have performed in a tire factory, an art gallery, a 1927 movie house, the site of the Moral Monday protests, and even historic slave quarters cabins.
